Bob's blood

                   After a lot of hard work,  laughs and fake tears. I present the short film "Bob's blood" a struggle between religion and science.

"Making a short film"

A.   Conflict

              Bob is in a coma. Most of his life he has been a member of a religion that does not tolerate any kind of invasive surgery or blood transfusion. So, there is a conflict between Bob’s wife, who has recently found out that is pregnant and wants her husband to survive and, Bob’s father who does not want that his son receives any kind of treatment. But the father doesn’t know that Bob is not a member of that religion anymore.

"The secret"

Today in class our professor gave us the beginning of what could be a very interesting story. He alse gave us the number of characters, setting and context. And he told us that there is a conflict but we must create them using the following basis:

They are a marriage, one is coming home and the other is getting out. One want to tell a secret and the other does not want his secret is discovered. What is the secret?

• Honey! What are you doing here?
• I just came home to… Wait! What are you doing outside?
• Well, I needed to go to… buy some stuff.
• But, you were terribly sick.
• I was. But not anymore. You see…
• Why are you carrying so many bags?
• Mmm... is part of the surprise I mean! I have great news.
• What are you talking about?
• Well, you know that I was felling sick this past week so… Honey! Why are you wearing sporty clothes?
• Well, I told you… yesterday! You never listen to me. I told you today was sporty day in the office.
• No, you didn’t. I would remember it. And, what are you doing in home so early?
• Oh! Why the interrogation official?
• No! Honey! I’m sorry. I’m just surprise to see you in home so early.
• It’s ok. Now, can you tell me why did you bought some many things? I’m sure you expend a fortune.
• No silly. Just a few things. Necessary thing.
• If you say so. I was very worried. I came home and you weren’t here.
• Yes, sorry for that. I try to call your to your office But, some funny friend of you told me that he hasn’t seen you there in days.
• Ja! Yeah! They always do that.
• Yeah! They are so funny. You should talk to your boss about this.
• Absolutely. I will. So… you are going to tell what the big surprise is?
• Of course. My love. We are pregnant. You are going to be a daddy.
• Oh! No!
• Ok, that is no the reaction I imagine.
• Is that why you bought so many things?
• Yes. I bought baby clothes, bottles, diapers and other thing.
• Oh! No! We are finished. You have to return them, now.
• No, why? Why this attitude? You are acting like an idiot.
• You don’t understand. I mean, we are… Honey! I have to tell you something.
• Baby, you are scaring me. Please tell me now.
• Well, you know that the company hasn’t been so well lately with  the crisis.
• Yes. You told me this last month. But, also told me that I should not worry.
• I know that. I know what I said but, things had change.
• How bad thing are?
• They had to fire a lot of employee.
• Oh! No!
• Yes. They fired me.
• Oh! No! We are really finished.
• Honey! No. Don’t worry. You had to return the things and everything is going to bw okay. 
• No! Is no that. I’m carrying triplets.

"Puff's adventures"

                 

                     Puff is a very naughty ferret.  He will do where ever he wants, whenever he wants. It is really very stubborn.  And, that is Ema’s fault. She never put a single rule to Puff, and now nobody can stop him.  To be honest Puff is a real pain in the ass. He had ten year and, he was as playfully as the first the he came to Emma’s home.

                Puff was one of the Emma’s gifts on her birthday number six. This was the surprise gift of her uncle Tomas. Tomas is the Ema’s uncle, but actually is much more than that. When Emma was little his parents travelled to Bolivia and they never returned. Since that day Ema has been under her uncle care.

                Today is Ema’s sixteenth birthday and also today marks ten years after the disappearance of her parents. So her uncle wants to make this day extra special so she will not feel sad. For that uncle Tomas asked Ema’s best friend for help. But would this be possible with Puff there?

                That day started like any other. Emma woke up and went to the kitchen, there was Puff lying on the window sunbathing. But unlike other years her uncle was not making his birthday pancakes as usual and that was very estrange. Ema concerned went to his uncle’s room and there he was lying plagued by mysterious ailments. Uncle Tomas explain Ema that he was sick and he needs special medicine and he asked her to go to buy it. Ema did not think twice and, went to dress and went shopping.

                Five minutes latters Rose arrive with a lot of packages ready to begin preparations for the surprise party. Tomas who was faking his illness got out of bed and went to open the door. Everything was going well so far but, the situation was about to be disastrous. All tasks were divided equally. Rose was the responsible for the decoration and uncle Tomas was the responsible for the banquet. It could not be easier if it not were for Puff who felt relegated so decided to hatch an evil plan.

                Rose first decided take care of the balloons. She inflates the balloons and leaves them in a corner to hang them later. But she does not expect that Puff pierced them one by one. When Rose saw the situation there was no longer any living balloon. Puff was punished and, was sentenced to stay in the kitchen until the balloons were all hanged.

                Uncle Tomas who loved cooking and especially baking was cooking a real feast. There were cakes, tarts and kutchens of all the flavours that you can imagine. It was almost ready, just missing the cakes were cooled and decorate chocolate cake which was the favourite of Ema and strangely pouf too. Uncle Tomas who knew how much Puff enjoyed sweet thing watched him carefully until suddenly he magically disappeared. Second later he was on the top of the refrigerator carefully watching the tarts and, then above all tartlets. So again was punished and sent this time to the bathroom.

                It was two o'clock when Ema called his uncle telling him that she could not find their remedy so she was coming home. Luckily everything was ready, the balloons were hung, the tarts that were saved were cold, the cake had been decorated and the guests had arrived. Everyone was eager less Puff who was still punished in the bathroom.

                Suddenly someone knocked on the door, it was Ema. All were in silence and hidden in different parts of the house. When she entered all shout surprise, Ema could not believe it, she was so happy. Everyone who love her was there, except for Puff. Then her uncle  enters  with a giant chocolate cake from where Puff appears. Puff was the centre of attention again. All remain silent and bewildered; they did not know how to react. Suddently a laugh is heard, it was Ema who cannot stop laughing. Rose and uncle Tomas look each other and look at Puff and started laughing nonstop. Puff did not understand. Why they are not angry with me? he thought.  Then Ema pulled out of her purse a small birthday hat and a mini chocolate cake. She gives it to Puff and explained: "Ten years ago I suffered a huge loss but simultaneously also I win the unconditional love of my uncle and a friend for life"

"Creating characters"

1.      One man: An uncle

A.      Tomas

      Tomas has about 60 years old, gray hair and beard. It has an olive skin with many wrinkles that are proof of his wisdom. Has large dark brown eyes that radiate kindness. And a smile that could brighten the saddest person in the world.

      He is a very cheerful person whom loves to talk, give advice and tell stories of their adventures. He is very affectionate, friendly and considerate. She loves to cook and work in her garden.

2.   Two female: Students

A.      Rose

      She has long black curly hair, dark-skinned, big brown eyes, a lot freckles, a round funny nose and a wide smile. She is very small but, very strong. She has 16 years old and doesn’t want to get older.

       It is a very happy girl, loves to talk and meet new people. She always faces life with a smile on his face. She is very brave and she isn’t afraid of the challenges. She is a dreamy, sensitive and romantic girl.

      She loves reading books, writing poetry, cooking, and riding. And above all loves nature.

B.   Emma

      She has long brown straight hair; olive-skinned, big brown dreamy eyes, curly long thick eyelashes, a shy smile and, a round loving face. And, she is as tall as her best friend and that is say too much. She is close to turn 16 years.

     She is sincere, kind, sweet, dreamy, loving and introvert by nature. Sometimes a little sullen. Others, a little proud.  A true freak of cleaning. She is a bit clumsy and clueless and, it has the memory of a rock.

        She loves to draw, paint, write stories and enjoy the little things in life.

3.   One pet: A ferret

A.      Puff

      Puff is not a ferret as others. He just turned one year. And it is the most elusive ferret that you can ever meet. If you see do not lose it of your sight because is less than a second "puff" disappears. This adventure lover cannot take more than 30 seconds in one place. Maybe if you're lucky, you'll find it in the kitchen eating all the candy he can find. Grumpy, vindictive and manipulative. Puff is someone which you must fear.

      Puff at first sight is an ordinary ferret. It is cream coloured and many others. His eyes are the window of his soul and you may notice quickly when "puff" is plotting his next adventure. On the other hand, when he gets angry his eyes are the representation of pure evil.

"Father and son" by Cat Stevens

            "Father and son" is a popular song written by the british singer Cat Stevens for his album "Tea for the Tillerman".

            The song is about the exchange of ideas between a father and his song. And, tell the story of a father that does not understand his son's desire of find his own way in life. In resume it is a dialogue between generations

            However, I investigated and, discovered that the song contains a deeper story. This because Cat Steves writes "Father and son" as part of a musical project with the actor Nigel Hawthorn called "Revolussia". The song takes place during the Russian Revolution and, tells the story of a boy who want to join the army against the wishes of his father. Well, the project never came to light and, Stevens transformed "Father ans son" in a more general context.

            I like this song for two reasons. The first, is because the gentle melody of the song and because Stevens sang both part of song adding personality to a song. And, second I really like this song because it reflects a common situation in the parent-child relationship. In which hundreds of people can be identified no matter your age. When you’re young you can identified with the son part and, when you get older with the father part. Finally I think that is a clear example of what reflects to being parent.

"Together we can stop street harassment"

            No matter your age, social status, or the place. It can be a pseudo compliment or a directly sexual assault. There are no women in our country that have not been harassed by a stranger, be it on a street or on public transport. I am talking about street harassment.

            No one is free from it. I know very well. Two years ago. I was walking to my home when I heard a man behind me saying obscenities. After a few seconds I note it that he was speaking to me. I was so scared. I walked as faster as I could to lose him, but he kept following me until I stopped and he continued his way. I'm 22 and similar things have happened to me since I was 12 years old.

            According to the “Observatorio Contra el Acoso Callejero” in Chile over 95% of women surveyed, between 12 and 64, have suffered some kind of street sexual harassment. It was also recorded that 25% of respondents between 13 and 18, has suffered street harassment twice a day and that 71% of respondents say they have suffered an experience of traumatic character.

            Street harassment is a form of violence against women that has been silenced for too long but it is finally breaking down cultural barriers that have allowed it to thrive. Next, I'll tell you, what street harassment is and what its effects are? I will also tell you what we can do to stop?

            First, we need to understand what is considered street harassment. According to the "Observatorio contra el acoso callejero" in Chile. Street harassment is a face to face interaction, usually between strangers who have the intent to harass or intimidate. This may include sexual language, whistling, kissing noises or physical actions such as fondling, masturbation, or stalking for a long time. Although most stalkers are men and women the harassed both genders can suffer street harassment.

            Harassment is harmful. According to the “Observatorio contra el acoso callejero” in Chile: “Street harassment often has serious and negative impact on women’s lives, both on their physical and emotional health. The severity of the reaction depends on the  severity of the harassment. The reactions frequently recorded by woman included, anxiety, depression, sleep disturbance, weight loss, or weight gain. Researchers also found that there is a connection between harassment and post-traumatic stress disorder.”

            We know that street harassment is a problem. So what can we do about it? According to the "Observatory against street harassment" in Chile there are four things we can do against street harassment. First educate. We need to educate the youth to change the mindset existing in Chile about women. This is because there are many people who believe that this is normal to treatment of women as objects and have no awareness that this may be demeaning. Secondly, we should try to punish this kind of behaviour when it is possible or give a correct answer when we are being harassed to discourage the harasser. Thirdly we need to stop blaming the victims of harassment and blame the truly responsible. We need to stop asking why victims wear particular clothes. Or why they  walked in that sector of the city. The harasser will always find a reason for his behaviour. And finally, we need to raise awareness of this problem by sharing our experiences. We all know someone who has experienced street harassment. Unless we take a stand and say no this is not right the harassment will continue.

            I lived ashamed of my body since I was twelve and I do not want this to happen to my children or future nephews. Unfortunately it has happened to my sister and her friends. We all have family or friends who have been affected by this issue and will continue unless we change it.  Street harassment is not something that only occurs in Chile, it occurs worldwide. And it's so normal that we do not recognise it when it happens in our community. If you see someone being harassed rebuke him. If you know someone who does this, let him know that is not right.  One person cannot change this, but if we do not unite as a community this may never change. I challenge you to join this cause and make the streets safer for your families and friends. I challenge you to change our culture and abolish street harassment. Make a difference we need, today.
